The world is currently facing a growing food insecurity crisis, and refugee communities like the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda are among the hardest hit. As one of the largest refugee settlements globally, Nakivale is home to over 180,000 individuals who face significant challenges, including food insecurity, limited economic opportunities, and inadequate access to education.
Plethora Social Initiative (PSI) is a refugee-led organization dedicated to working with individuals in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement through sustainable initiatives in agriculture, entrepreneurship, and skills development. PSI envisions a future where refugee youth and communities actively lead and participate in shaping their destinies, fostering inclusivity, and catalyzing positive change with lasting solutions. To achieve this vision, they plan to build a community learning center as a hub for education, skills development, and community engagement. Their primary focus is to educate refugee farmers in regenerative agriculture, a transformative approach that restores degraded soils improves crop yields, and reduces dependency on aid.
For the past three years, PSI has been conducting permaculture training outdoors, under trees, due to the lack of a permanent facility. While this approach has allowed them to continue providing valuable education in permaculture to refugees, it has also presented several challenges. The training sessions are often disrupted by unpredictable weather conditions, such as rain or extreme heat, making it difficult for participants to engage fully. A dedicated learning facility would significantly enhance the quality and impact of their programs.

In a time when access to food is uncertain for so many, regenerative agriculture offers not just a solution but also a pathway to dignity and independence for refugees.
