Permaculture as a living practice of solidarity and resilience

In 2023, as political pressure in Pakistan intensified, the government declared its intent to expel Afghan nationals, placing thousands of lives in danger—many of whom had already fled conflict once before. Amid this crisis, a quiet but powerful effort emerged from within the global permaculture network. A group of dedicated permaculturalists, recognising the urgency and injustice of the situation, began mobilising resources, networks, and design thinking to assist their peers in seeking safety.

One of these efforts was led by Eunice Neves and Rowe Morrow, who worked tirelessly to help 23 Afghan permaculturalists escape Pakistan and resettle in Portugal. Others found refuge in countries such as Brazil. What united these individuals was not only their refugee status, but their shared commitment to permaculture and peace – a movement rooted in care for people, care for the Earth, and the fair sharing of resources. These values became a guiding force in the response, shaping both the logistical strategy and the emotional support structures offered throughout the process.

The initiative evolved into a kind of permaculture peace group, applying permaculture principles to design a 12-month support program for those being relocated. This program wasn’t just about physical relocation—it was about regeneration. It included cultural orientation, community-building, trauma-informed support, and opportunities to continue practicing permaculture in their new environments. In doing so, the program offered a sense of continuity, dignity, and purpose—essential ingredients for displaced people trying to rebuild their lives.

This story is a reminder that permaculture is not only a system for ecological design, but a living practice of solidarity and resilience. In times of displacement and crisis, it can become a framework for sanctuary and transformation.
